Nanofibrous Biomaterials
About the Seminar:
Natural tissues exhibit complex structures with somewhat unique arrangements and architectures of fibrous shapes, and scientists have possessed great interest to extracellular matrix (ECM) mimicking materials, particularly in the field of tissue engineering. Electrospinning offers advantages for the preparation of 2-D and 3-D fibrous scaffolds similar to the structural characteristics of ECM in native tissues. Fibers can be produced in range from several
nanometers to several micrometers with this technique. Nanoscaled fibers are able to improve the cellular interactions of a wide variety of cell types; moreover, the cells are able to maintain their phenotypic and functional characteristics on fibrous scaffolds. In addition, the topography of nanofibrous scaffolds plays an important role in controlling cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Therefore, electrospun scaffolds can be functionalized by adding biochemical and mechanical agents to enhance cellular interactions for tissue engineering applications.
A variety of spinning approaches have been demonstrated for the production of fiber mats at different characteristics. Thus, they allow the production of scaffolds of any desired character (for example, specific to a damaged area) by controlling the structural characteristics of the scaffold. In this section, several spinning approaches, especially electrospinning method, will be presented as fibrous tissue scaffold producing technique.
About the Speaker:
Murat Şimşek received his PhD and MSc degrees in Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine and Bioengineering departments, Hacettepe University, Ankara, respectively. His bachelor degree was from Physics department in Ankara University, Ankara. His doctoral thesis is about “Nanofiber-patterned Polymeric Membranes: Surface chemistry, topography and Cellular interactions”. He has above fifteen articles, a national patent and several research projects ongoing. Dr. Şimşek is currently assistant professor at the department of Biomedical Engineering in İnonu Universiy, Malatya. His research area mainly based on polymeric biomaterials, nanotechnology and nanomedicine.
